NEW SERVICES FOR SENIORS IN MELVILLE

Released on April 27, 2001

Melville Legion Manor Inc., a non-profit organization, and the Melville

Housing Authority are together offering new support services at Legion

Manor and Queen Street Manor.

Saskatchewan Assisted Living Services (SALS) are co-ordinated and community-

based, offering fee-for-service support options for seniors. Services

include laundry and housekeeping, nutritional meals, response to urgent or

other unscheduled needs, and the co-ordination of social and recreation

services.

"SALS is a province-wide initiative that provides optional support services

to seniors to encourage independence, dignity and choice," Municipal

Affairs and Housing Minister Ron Osika said. "This support emphasizes the

well-being of tenants is a shared responsibility between tenants, their

families, the community and the local housing authority."

SALS co-ordinates services through a community-based approach, providing

tenants with a choice of the services they want. The services are being

introduced by housing authorities and non-profit organizations throughout

Saskatchewan.

"Saskatchewan Assisted Living Services promotes physical, mental, and

social well-being," Osika said. "We are pleased to provide this help to

seniors at the Legion and Queen Street Manors."
