Released on April 17, 2001
Enhanced 9-1-1 service is now available in Broadview and surrounding area.
For land-line telephones, the new service displays a caller's phone number
and location to a trained 9-1-1 call-taking operator at a Public Safety
Answering Point (PSAP). The call is then directed to the appropriate
emergency service provider - police, fire or ambulance.
"Enhanced 9-1-1 service provides a simple, universally recognized number
and reduces the need for callers to communicate detailed information,"
Municipal Affairs and Housing Minister Ron Osika said. "This is a
tremendous benefit to young children or anyone in an emergency situation
who may have difficulty describing their location.
"This is another step toward province-wide 9-1-1. With this expansion,
more than half the land-line telephones in the province have the enhanced 9-
1-1 service. This is a great benefit to both residents and travellers in
our province."
To support province-wide 9-1-1, a monthly fee of $1.00 per residential
line, $0.50 per business line, and $2.40 per business trunk line will be
collected from customers once they begin receiving the new service. These
fees cover the purchase, installation and maintenance of enhanced 9-1-1
equipment and the on-going operation of the call-taking system.
Today's expansion of 9-1-1 service includes 117 municipalities. As a
result, residents of a total of 309 municipalities province-wide now have
access to enhanced 9-1-1 service. A map showing the coverage area will be
mailed to residents in the expanded region.
