SASKATOON IMMIGRANTS RECEIVE ASSISTANCE

Released on September 13, 2000

A provincial government grant will support the Saskatoon Open Door Society in

its efforts to help immigrants establish homes, educate their children and find

jobs in the community.

Saskatoon Meewasin MLA Carolyn Jones presented a $35,000 grant to the society

on behalf of Municipal Affairs, Culture and Housing Minister Jack Hillson.

"The provincial government believes its support to community groups is a key

component to building a strong Saskatchewan," Jones said. "The many volunteers

and supporters of the Saskatoon Open Door Society are welcoming people to our

province and helping them to become established members of the community. We

are pleased to support their effort and to acknowledge their 20th

anniversary."

The Society will use the money to help people find a place to live, get

utilities hooked up, open bank accounts, shop for clothing, provide translation

services and language classes, help with accessing health services and

education.

Last year, the Saskatoon Open door Society helped 179 Kosovar refugees settle

in the community.
