NEUROSURGERY PROGRAM STABILIZED IN SASKATOOON

Released on October 31, 2000

Access to brain surgery, spinal column surgery and treatment of epilepsy is

being secured and enhanced for the people of Saskatchewan.

The future of Saskatoon's neurosurgery program has been stabilized following an

agreement by Saskatchewan Health, Saskatoon District Health, the University of

Saskatchewan and the College of Medicine.

The agreement coincides with the commitment from neurosurgeon Dr. Bob Griebel,

to stay in Saskatchewan and continue his practice.

"I have a lot of respect for Dr. Griebel," Health Minister Pat Atkinson said.

"This is excellent news for all of Saskatchewan and it shows what can be done

when people understand the seriousness of a situation and work together to come

to an agreement."

"We have continued to provide neurosurgery services as scheduled," said Jim

Fergusson, Saskatoon District Health Chief Executive Officer. "Due to quick

action and the support of the College of Medicine and the Department of Health,

those services will not be disrupted."

"The presence of a strong academic health sciences centre in Saskatchewan is

important to the people of this province. I am looking forward to working with

the provincial government and the health district to ensure that all of the

University of Saskatchewan's health sciences are capable of fulfilling their

mandate of top quality academic research and clinical work," said Peter

MacKinnon, President of the University of Saskatchewan.

"Dr. Griebel is extremely important to our teaching program. His presence

increases our ability to attract quality postgraduate medical students from

across Canada and beyond," said Dr. David Popkin, the Dean of the College of

Medicine.

The agreement, a Memorandum of Understanding, outlines the commitment of

funding to support one additional neurosurgeon in Saskatoon, additional

operating room time and more support in neuroradiology and neuropathology.

There was also agreement to look at the feasibility of establishing a new

neurosciences department.

The College of Medicine has initiated efforts to bring the number of

neurosurgeons in Saskatoon up to five. The Saskatoon District Health Board

will ensure support services are available to neuropathology and neuroradiology

programs.

Recruitment efforts in anesthesia, another speciality area experiencing

vacancies, will continue by Saskatoon District Health with support from

Saskatchewan Health.
