SASKPOWER FIRST ELECTRICAL UTILITY IN CANADA TO ACHIEVE INTERNATIONAL ENVIRONMENTAL REGISTRATION

Released on October 20, 2000

SaskPower is the first electrical utility in Canada, and the first major

business headquartered in Saskatchewan, to achieve corporate-wide ISO 14001

registration.

"The ISO registration demonstrates to regulators, and to the people of

Saskatchewan, Canada, and the world, that SaskPower's environmental management

system is sound and meets internationally recognized standards," Crown

Investments Corporation Minister John Nilson said.

ISO 14001 is part of the ISO 14000 series – an initiative developed by the

International Organization for Standardization (ISO), and supported by

governments and industries in more than 90 countries worldwide. The initiative

is improving the way companies around the world do business and, specifically,

how they manage their environmental activities.

"Environmental management is a key business issue for SaskPower, and

environmental responsibility is now a cornerstone of good business – both

strategically and operationally," SaskPower President John Wright said.

"SaskPower is now aligned with the top environmental performers in the world

market."

The Quality Certification Bureau, an international quality and environmental

systems registrar based in Edmonton, recently completed a series of independent

audits at SaskPower work sites across the province, and awarded SaskPower with

the ISO 14001 designation.

"This important achievement was made possible only by the hard work of the

employees who led the project, and those employees who have integrated our

environmental management system into the day-to-day business of the

corporation," Wright adds.

The core of the ISO 14000 series is ISO 14001, a standard that defines elements

of a sound environmental management system (EMS). Ultimately, the initiative

provides a framework for environmental management, measurement, evaluation,

auditing and continuous improvement.

ISO 14001 is a best practice management system. It requires organizations make

a commitment to comply with legal and other requirements, foster environmental

protection, and work to continually improve their environmental management

system.
