REGINA COMMUNITY CLINIC EXPANDS SERVICE

Released on October 11, 2000

A specially-trained nurse and extended hours are making it easier to get

treatment at the Regina Community Clinic.

Glorianne Bjerland is the clinic's first primary care nurse, and is trained to

treat patients with common illnesses and stable chronic conditions. She works

in partnership with physicians and other community health professionals, and is

often the first contact into the health system for patients.

The clinic, a primary health service site, emphasizes disease prevention, early

intervention, health promotion, treatment and follow-up care. Clinic hours,

previously 8:30 am to 5:30 pm, have been extended until 7:00 pm Tuesday through

Thursday. Bjerland sees patients from 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM, Tuesday through

Thursday.

"The Regina Community Clinic is an excellent example of the team approach to

health care, and of wise use of health care providers," Associate Health

Minister Judy Junor said. "Extended hours will mean better access to the

clinic's services, and to the wide range of skills offered by the new primary

care nurse."

Junor added primary health care's emphasis on prevention, early detection and

intervention, and healthy lifestyles will mean lower health care costs in the

future. The Regina Community Clinic's programs include promotion of healthier

diets among seniors and families, and guidance for teenaged mothers to ensure

their babies have a healthy start.

Clinic Executive Director Mary Flynn says the changes have had an immediate

impact. "These innovations have given the Regina Community Clinic greater

flexibility and allowed us to maximize our resources," Flynn said. "Our

clients particularly appreciate being able to book same-day appointments."

The Regina Community Clinic is one of 18 primary health service sites in

Saskatchewan. Physicians and nurses work with community health professionals

to provide services that include physiotherapy, nutrition, optometry,

acupuncture and counselling.
