11,000 Saskatchewan teachers will join 55 million colleagues around the world
as they are honoured with their own day for celebration and praise. World
Teachers Day takes place Thursday, October 5, 2000.
World Teachers' Day is proclaimed yearly by the United Nations Educational,
Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to celebrate the contributions of
teachers for serving 1 billion students and to give them a day to voice their
concerns and priorities. This year's theme is "Teachers Expanding Horizons".
"I am pleased that one of my tasks as Education Minister is to add my voice to
those around the world praising teachers," Education Minister Jim Melenchuk
said. "Teachers in Saskatchewan have in their hands the exciting challenge of
preparing Saskatchewan children to be tomorrow's leaders and to move this
province forward in the new millennium."
Minister Melenchuk noted Saskatchewan teachers have been key players in
developments such as Saskatchewan's world-class curriculum and the award-
winning Community Schools program.
"Teachers in this province want all Saskatchewan students, regardless of
circumstance, to have their horizons expanded through education," Melenchuk
said.
UNESCO first proclaimed world Teachers' Day in 1994.
