ACRE DEVELOPS BLUEPRINT FOR ACTION

Released on October 5, 2000

The Action Committee on the Rural Economy (ACRE) set out a blueprint for its

work over the next two to four years at a meeting in Regina yesterday and today.

ACRE will recommend strategies to government to drive sustainable economic

development and develop the competitiveness of Saskatchewan products.

The group has named sub-committee chairs to focus on eight areas for rural

development: Agriculture, Agri-value, Community in Evolution, Farm

structure/Farm income, Resources, Rural Manufacturing and Construction, Rural

Service and Tools for Economic Development.

"These groups will be on the front line for ACRE, facilitating our discussions

with rural residents and community economic development organizations," said

Kamsack-area producer Audrey Horkoff, who co-chairs ACRE with Saskatchewan

Agriculture and Food Minister Clay Serby. "Their members bring together a

wealth of experience from across the province as well as individual expertise

in specific rural sectors.

"Strong, vibrant rural communities are our goal, and we believe that

Saskatchewan has the resources and the people to make it happen. As we explore

innovative ideas for both government and industry, we will work within the

Saskatchewan framework of co-operation, community and fiscal responsibility and

we want to hear from as many people as possible. We invite anyone with an idea

or a thought to share to contact us."

ACRE's next meeting is scheduled to take place in January.
