SASKATCHEWAN HONOURS ITS VOLUNTEERS

Released on May 17, 2000

The province's unique honour for volunteers, the Saskatchewan Volunteer Medal,

was presented to eight citizens today at the legislature in Regina.

Lieutenant Governor Lynda Haverstock presented the medal to the eight in

recognition of outstanding volunteer service or exceptional community

involvement beyond the individual's normal profession or duties.

This year's recipients are:

nurses' organizations;

Ronald J. Gallaway, of Estevan, who played a major role in agricultural

associations and was founding president of the Saskatchewan Association

of Fairs and Exhibitions;

William Kalmakoff, of Saskatoon, a leading figure in the Doukhobor

community, who is also well known for promoting multiculturalism and

heritage languages.

Alice Leung, of Saskatoon, committed to promoting Chinese language and

heritage programs and an active civic fundraiser;

Beatrice Middleton, of Moosomin, a dedicated volunteer in her community

for health care, seniors and church organizations;

Gerri Peppler, of Yorkton, a leader in the local health care centre and

civic groups and chair of Special Olympics Summer Games in 1994;

F. W. "Bill" Perry, of Craven, who played a major role as organizer of

the RCMP Sunset Ceremony and band. He directed and produced the RCMP

Tattoo in 1998; and

Patricia Thistlethwaite, of Swift Current, active in agriculture,

seniors' and church organizations.

Recipients of the volunteer medal receive a certificate and lapel pin and may

use the initials S.V.M. after their names.

These eight are the fifth group of recipients since the honour was established

in 1995. Nominations came from across the province and deserving individuals

were selected by the Saskatchewan Honours Advisory Council.

Including the 1999 recipients, thirty-four Saskatchewan citizens have been

awarded the medal since its inception. Anyone wishing to nominate someone for

the 2000 Saskatchewan Volunteer Medal should contact the Saskatchewan Honours

and Awards Secretariat at 1-877-427-5505.
