FARM INPUT COST COMPARISONS NOW AVAILABLE
Released on May 16, 2000
Saskatchewan producers now have access to current information on available
prices for crop production inputs. Saskatchewan Agriculture and Food (SAF) is
issuing a monthly survey report on crop production input costs, to allow
producers to compare prices for selected products.
The monthly Farm Input Price Survey report and regional price information are
available on SAF's website at: www.agr.gov.sk.ca/fips or from Rural Service
Centres.
"Farm inputs are a major expense for producers," Deputy Premier and Agriculture
and Food Minister Dwain Lingenfelter said. "Last year Saskatchewan producers
spent over $4 billion on crop inputs and other production expenses. Producers
need better price information to make management decisions related to farm
input purchases. The Farm Input Price Survey report will provide better price
information for farmers."
The survey differs from past surveys by monitoring actual prices that producers
are paying for farm inputs rather than list prices. The report will more
closely reflect market activity. Price variations in the report may reflect
factors such as volume (bulk) purchases, payment terms, transportation costs or
season.
Producers will be able to access data on as many as 179 products by crop
district and region.
The farm input price information is collected monthly from a network of over
200 farmers located throughout the province. This initiative is the result of
a partnership among Saskatchewan Agriculture and Food, Agriculture and Agri-
Food Canada and the Provincial Council of Agriculture Development and
Diversification Boards for Saskatchewan.
