CONSTRUCTION BEGINS ON NEW NORTH BATTLEFORD LIQUOR STORE

Released on January 24, 2000

Construction will begin next week on a new $1.1 million liquor store in North

Battleford.

"The contract for the construction has now been awarded and we're ready to

begin work on this important community project," Intergovernmental and

Aboriginal Affairs Minister Jack Hillson said on behalf of Doreen Hamilton,

minister responsible for the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority (SLGA).

"This revitalization project has been a long-standing goal of the City of North

Battleford, and it's very good to see something concrete finally in place.

We're very pleased we have been able to partner with the community in anchoring

its Town Square development plan."

The store is being constructed under a partnership between SLGA and the City of

North Battleford and plays an important role in the city's major revitalization

of its central business district. Located at the corner of 100th Street and

Railway Avenue, the store will maintain the architectural integrity of the area

with exterior design complementing the neighbouring Allan Sapp Gallery and the

Court House. Columns salvaged from the demolished Royal Bank Building will be

incorporated into the building's façade.

"The new liquor store location will enhance customer service through expanded

parking, easier access, increased product selection and extended hours of

operation, as well as contributing to North Battleford's Town Square

Development Plan," Hillson said. "Building the liquor store will be

instrumental in assisting the city to see its goals for the development become

reality."

Bids were publicly tendered for the construction contract, which has now been

awarded to the lowest bidder, Craftex Builders Inc., of Lloydminster. The

project will create the equivalent of 15 full-time jobs in Saskatchewan's

construction industry. The new store is expected to open in July 2000.
