LYNDA HAVERSTOCK INSTALLED AS LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR

Released on February 21, 2000

Lynda Haverstock today was installed as the 19th Lieutenant Governor of

Saskatchewan.

In a colourful ceremony held in the Legislative Chamber, Dr. Haverstock took

her oath of office before Chief Justice E. D. Bayda and then was proclaimed

Lieutenant Governor by Premier Roy Romanow before approximately 500 guests.

Also participating in installation ceremony were Provincial Secretary Jack

Hillson; Speaker of the Legislative Assembly Ron Osika; Natural Resources

Canada Minister Ralph Goodale, representing the federal government; and

Opposition Leader Elwin Hermanson.

"Dr. Haverstock's past work in education, psychology and politics will serve

her well into the future as Saskatchewan's Lieutenant Governor. While her

roles have varied, her great compassion for those around her has remained

strong," said Premier Romanow. "I am confident she will bring this warmth and

dedication to her new role as Saskatchewan's representative of the Queen."

The ceremony included performances by soloists Lynn Channing and Joseph Ziwa

and the Saskatoon Chamber singers. Students from the Saskatoon French School

and from Regina's Imperial School attended the ceremony. Elder Betty McKenna,

representing the First Nations, and Reverend Wayne Knouse, of Westminster

United Church in Regina, offered prayers.

After the ceremony, Lt. Gov. Haverstock inspected a guard of honour composed of

Saskatchewan army and naval reservists. Guests then watched a lively

performance by Headstart, a group of young Aboriginal dancers and singers.

Lt.-Gov. Haverstock was born in Swift Current. She has a daughter and two

grandchildren.
