HISTORIC BUILDINGS HONOURED ON HERITAGE DAY

Released on February 21, 2000

Two buildings important to the development of telephone service in Saskatchewan

got some special attention today.

A plaque was unveiled at the former Regina Telephone Exchange building at 1870

Lorne Street, marking it as a provincial heritage property. The building is

owned by Sask Sport Inc. and currently houses their offices.

The former head office of Saskatchewan Government Telephones, located at 2340

Albert Street, has also been designated a provincial heritage property. It

currently serves as an annex of the Royal Saskatchewan Museum.

"Saskatchewan's heritage buildings provide a source of community pride and a

connection with the past," Municipal Affairs, Culture and Housing Minister Clay

Serby said. "These heritage property designations honour the development of

telephone service in Saskatchewan and provide the buildings with specific

protection."

The architectural firm of Van Egmond and Storey designed both buildings. The

firm was commissioned by Saskatchewan Government Telephones to design at least

a third of its major buildings between 1909 and 1930.

The plaques were unveiled to mark Heritage Day in Saskatchewan - February 21.
