CHRISTMAS MESSAGE FROM THE LIEUTENANT-GOVERNOR, LYNDA HAVERSTOCK

Released on December 12, 2000

It is such an honour for me to be your new lieutenant governor and to have this

opportunity to share a message of hope.

The United Nations declared that this year was to be the year of peace. 2000

years ago, the prince of peace – Jesus Christ – was born. As he walked the

earth, he spoke of the need for harmony and understanding, the strength of

forgiveness, and the decency of reaching out to others in their time of need.

He exemplified self-sacrifice and service and came to embody characteristics of

kindness, goodness, and mercy.

What tremendous lessons his teachings provide and how blessed we are to be in a

position every day when we can choose to be more kind, more merciful and better

people.

In my position as lieutenant governor, I am truly fortunate to observe

individuals – young and old, organizations and even entire communities who are

doing outstanding deeds. It is a constant inspiration and provides proof of

the indominable human spirit in action.

So this christmas season, let's give thanks to those who have taken the words

of Jesus to heart. Let's be grateful for living in a peaceful nation and pray

that others may have the same.

And as the year of volunteerism - 2001 approaches, let's encourage each other

to dedicate ourselves to worthy causes.

My husband Harley and I wish you much happiness from our family to yours.

Joyous christmas, happy hanukah and a blessed new year! I am pleased to bring

greetings on behalf of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second, Queen of

Canada. I leave you with the words of our monarch, written when she was yet a

princess on the occasion of her twenty-first birthday.

"If we all go forward together with an unwavering faith, a high courage, and a

quiet heart, we shall be able to make of this ancient commonwealth, which we

all love so dearly, an even grander thing – more free, more prosperous, more

happy and a more powerful influence for good in the world.
