HAULING GRAIN IN WINTER AN OPTION

Released on August 14, 2000

Farmers are being encouraged to consider hauling their grain during the winter

months, whenever practical.

During the winter period (Dec. 1 – Feb. 28), the allowable weights on all

Saskatchewan highways are increased. For example, for a typical farmer using a

tandem axle truck, the allowable weight on the tandem axle increases to 18,000

kg on all highways (this compares to summer tandem axle weights of 14,500 kg on

municipal and secondary highways). In order to haul maximum winter weights,

the vehicle must be registered by SGI for primary highway weights.

"To help alleviate the pressure those roads are facing, I am encouraging

farmers to consider trucking their grain in the winter, whenever possible,"

Highways and Transportation Minister Maynard Sonntag said. "By carrying

heavier winter weights, they save on transportation costs by not having to make

as many trips.

"Overall road damage can be greatly reduced. A major concern for the province

is the stress our roads and highways are experiencing due to increased grain

haul by road instead of rail."

Winter weights vary according to the type of vehicle being used. Detailed

brochures with information on winter weights are available by calling 306-787-

8540 or access the Saskatchewan Highways and Transportation page at

www.highways.gov.sk.ca.
