INNOVATION KICKS OFF EDUCATION WEEK

Released on October 18, 1999

Saskatchewan's education minister unveiled a new piece of technology this

morning that will be a big help to rural students wanting to learn about

computers.

Dr. Jim Melenchuk was in the town of Clavet, where he showcased a mobile

computer training lab to kick off Education Week in the province.

"This is an innovative way to improve the quality of education for teachers and

students in schools everywhere. By constructing a computer training facility

within a van and making a trainer available, we are providing equal access to

technology training for all Saskatchewan educators," Melenchuk said.

"Rural teachers in particular appreciate opportunities in their own communities

to increase their knowledge and comfort with computers and the Internet. The

new mobile training lab will travel Saskatchewan to provide convenient, cost-

efficient access."

The computer lab on wheels is equipped with direct satellite technology and a

dedicated computer network server. Students can use eight multi-media capable

laptops that connect to the server through wireless technology and a data

projector. The lab is a partnership initiative of Saskatchewan Education,

Industry Canada's SchoolNet GrassRoots program and SCN.

"Saskatchewan Communications Network (SCN) increases the opportunity for all

Saskatchewan residents to access and participate in learning. The mobile

computer lab is another way that SCN technological solutions have been used to

meet the needs of learners at a distance," SCN President and CEO James Benning

said.
