1999 SGI CANADA CHARITY CURLING CLASSIC KICKS OFF THIS WEEK

Released on October 6, 1999

The 1999 SGI CANADA Charity Classic bonspiel kicks off Thursday in Regina.

"The Charity Classic offers world-class curling, great entertainment and all

proceeds go to a Saskatchewan charity," said SGI CANADA President Larry Fogg.

"This year we're pleased to introduce a separate women's division, the Casino

Regina Women's Challenge."

Thirty-two internationally acclaimed men's teams and 12 of Canada's top women's

teams will be competing at the Charity Classic. The weekend also includes a

two-day craft sale, musical entertainment at Classic Cheers, a children's play

area and other attractions to make the weekend enjoyable for the entire family.

The Charity Classic runs Thanksgiving weekend, Oct. 7-11, at the Regina

Agridome and the Tartan Curling Club. The event will again feature some of the

world's best curlers, including Guy Hemmings, 1998 and 1999 provincial men's

champion in Quebec and a Canadian silver medallist both years; Cindy Street, a

Canadian junior champion and 1999 provincial women's champion; and Wayne

Middaugh, 1998 world champion and winner of the 1998 SGI CANADA Charity Classic.

Since 1993, the Charity Classic has raised more than $80,000 for Saskatchewan

charities. Proceeds from the 1999 Charity Classic will go to KidSport

Saskatchewan.

"KidSport is committed to giving children the chance to participate in sports

regardless of their families' financial obstacles," said Dorothy Josephson,

Volunteer Chairperson for KidSport Saskatchewan. "Through sports, children

learn the fundamentals of teamwork, dedication and responsibility."

The Charity Classic is organized and staffed by volunteers and all operating

revenue is raised through advertising and sponsorship from SGI CANADA brokers

and business partners.
