NEW MOOSE JAW LIQUOR STORE OPENS

Moose Jaw's former CPR Station roared back to life today with the official

opening of the new Station Centre Liquor Store.



"This store is an achievement on many levels," said Doreen Hamilton, minister

responsible for the Liquor and Gaming Authority. "Our partnership with the

City of Moose Jaw and its tourism groups has created a valuable addition to the

city's tunnel-tourism theme. A beautiful, historic downtown building has been

revitalized. Moose Jaw liquor store customers will now have more space, more

products and better access to service."



The Station Centre Liquor Store recreates Moose Jaw's history. In the 1920s,

the CPR station was a hive of local activity and transport. The building was

empty and deteriorating when the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority began

renovating it for a new liquor store in July.



The station, at Manitoba and Main Street, includes many of the original

architectural features of the building, such as its terracotta tiles and ticket

wicket, which have been refurbished. The stately clock tower is being

repaired, and some of the original benches from the station have been

incorporated into the design of the store. Even new features, such as the

lighting, have been designed to reflect the historic era. A mural, depicting

the station's place in the city's history, will be added to an outside wall in

the spring.



The new store replaces the Fairford Street liquor store, which did not have

sufficient space and was difficult to access. The Fairford Street store is now

closed and the Liquor and Gaming Authority is tendering for the sale of the

building. All staff from the Fairford Street store have moved to the new

location, and its hours of operation will remain the same, 9:30 a.m. until 9

p.m., Monday to Saturday. The hours of operation and staffing of the South

Hill liquor store in Moose Jaw will not change.
