MOOSE JAW RAIL UNDERPASS ASSISTANCE PROVIDED

Highways and Transportation Minister Judy Bradley today announced the

province is providing $400,000 to the City of Moose Jaw to build a

rail underpass at 8th Avenue SE in partnership with Canadian Pacific

Railway (CPR).



"We are pleased to assist Moose Jaw in meeting their transportation

needs and support this important economic development initiative,"

Bradley said.



An independent study was conducted and a public open house was held to

consider a number of options to potential traffic congestion problems

caused by a proposed CPR refuelling facility. The proposed facility

would be the key regeneration point for CPR trains moving across the

prairies. The underpass option was selected as the best solution to

meet transportation needs, to address environmental concerns in the

Wakamow Valley and to satisfy the public's concerns for the area.



"It was imperative we consider all the factors in the project, not

just providing sufficient access, but safety concerns and the

environment in the park," Bradley said. "This investment will also

solidify Moose Jaw's position as a strategic hub for rail business

across the prairies."



The railway underpass is projected to cost $3.3 million.

Construction will be handled by the City of Moose Jaw and is

expected to start this summer.
