SASKATCHEWAN PUBLIC SERVICE EARNS NATIONAL RECOGNITION

Released on May 14, 1999

Doreen Hamilton, minister responsible for the Public Service

Commission, today announced that the Saskatchewan Public Service

Commission has won a national award for its work in human resource

management.

The Gold Star Agency Award, the Canadian Public Personnel Management

Association's highest honour, recognizes organizations for outstanding

support for the association and for innovative principles and

practices that lead to overall improvements in human resource

programs.

"The PSC has played a key leadership role in moving human resources

from an administrative focus to a strategic business partnership,"

Hamilton said. "I would like to congratulate the PSC for its

outstanding work and I would also like to thank all provincial public

servants for their continuing contributions to the betterment of this

province and its people."

The Gold Star Agency Award is not presented each year. This year,

however, there were two outstanding nominations and Natural Resources

Canada will also receive an award. Previous winners include the

federal public service La RelŠve initiative in Ottawa in 1998 and the

Health Care Corporation of St. John's in Newfoundland in 1997.

The PSC is the independent agency responsible for recruiting

employees and co-ordinating staff training and development, as

well as human resource planning, job classification,

compensation, collective bargaining, contract administration and

other support services to the Government of Saskatchewan. It

also co-ordinates the government's Employment Equity Program and

Employee and Family Assistance Program.

CPPMA is a national organization for human resource

professionals. The award will be presented to Public Service

Commission Chair Wynne Young in Ottawa on May 18, 1999.
