SASKPOWER LAUNCHES SECOND PHASE OF ELECTROSTATIC PRECIPITATOR INSTALLATION AT BOUNDARY DAM POWER STATION

Lingenfelter, today announced that a second unit at Boundary Dam Power

Station will be retrofitted with electrostatic precipitators,

beginning later this year.



The installation is the second phase of a five-year project to reduce

particulate emissions at Boundary Dam Power Station. The project is

the lead initiative under a Memorandum of Understanding reached by

SaskPower and the Department of Environment and Resource Management in

March 1998 to provide long-term environmental protection initiatives.

The electrostatic precipitators will remove up to 99 per cent of

particulate emissions from the stacks at Boundary Dam Power Station,

reducing emissions to within government guidelines for new power

stations and supporting SaskPower's environmental action plan and

commitment to sustainable development.



The first phase installing an electrostatic precipitator on Unit #4

will be in service by late September 1999. Unit #3 will be

retrofitted in the second phase, which begins this summer and is

scheduled for completion by September 2000.



Through competitive tender, ABB Power Generation Segment in Canada has

been awarded the contract to design, manufacture and commission the

Unit #3 electrostatic precipitator. This second phase will cost

approximately $12 million and create 30 person-years of employment.

Saskatchewan businesses will also be able to bid on up to $2.5 million

worth of work, such as steel fabrication, material supply and

construction equipment rental.



Lingenfelter presented ABB Power Generation Segment in Canada with

SaskPower's Power of Business award, an initiative to recognize the

contributions of suppliers throughout Saskatchewan. A recognized

leader in precipitator technology, ABB has customers across Canada and

in 25 countries world-wide.



"The environmental and economic benefits of ABB's partnership with

SaskPower to our community and our province are many,"

Liungenfelter said. "ABB is one more example of a SaskPower

partnership that is working for the citizens of Saskatchewan."



"The steps being taken to reduce particulate emissions from the stacks

at Boundary Dam will have a significant effect on the environment

without compromising the reliability, or affordability, of our power

supply," said Environment and Resource Management Minister Lorne

Scott.



The remaining three units at Boundary Dam Power Station are to be

retrofitted with electrostatic precipitators at a rate of one per

year, with project completion in 2003.
