GLOVE MANUFACTURING BUSINESS OPENED IN BIRCH HILLS

Released on March 1, 1999

Economic and Co-operative Development Minister Janice MacKinnon today

participated in the grand opening of Country Leathers Manufacturing

and the eighth anniversary celebration of Rugged Country

Manufacturing. The two Birch Hills apparel and textile businesses

employ 16 people from the town.

Both enterprises are owned by Bob and Heather Cockwill. The new firm,

Country Leathers, is the only manufacturer of gloves in the province.

Rugged Country, also known as B & H Canvas Inc., manufactures a

variety of sport and garment bags and briefcases.

"These two firms are proof that hard-working, innovative people can

build successful manufacturing businesses in smaller communities

throughout Saskatchewan," MacKinnon said. "Through perseverance and

commitment to quality, these two businesses are competing successfully

with firms many times their size."

Rugged Country also includes leather jackets, home care products and

promotional items among its 200 products. It has customers across

Canada, in the United States and as far away as Australia and is the

exclusive supplier to this year's Air Canada Cup Midget Hockey

tournament in Prince Albert. Country Leathers manufactures work,

western and dress gloves and is supplying a number of Saskatchewan

corporations.

"I find in rural Saskatchewan there are a lot of employable

people who have good work ethics and experience in the needle

industry," said Bob Cockwill. "With a little training these

employees can help businesses produce high quality products.

You have to remember in business you're only as good as your

employees."

Saskatchewan's apparel and textile industry consists of 400

companies, almost 60 per cent of which are located in rural

Saskatchewan. The industry has annual sales in excess of

$45 million and grew by 76 per cent from 1990 to 1995.
