PRESIDENT OF ICELAND VISITS SASKATCHEWAN

Released on July 28, 1999

Olafur Ragnar Grimsson, President of Iceland, arrives today for a 3-day visit to the province. This working trip will include visits to

several communities with historic links to Iceland.

"This visit is a good opportunity to discuss trade and other issues

with the president," Premier Roy Romanow said. "We have an interest

in determining how Canada's proposed trade agreement with the European

Free Trade Area (EFTA), of which Iceland is a member, can work for

Saskatchewan."

President Grimsson will dine with the Lieutenant Governor and invited

guests at Government House in Regina on Wednesday evening. On

Thursday morning he will meet with Premier Romanow in Saskatoon and

then visit Wynyard, Foam Lake and Elfros.

These communities comprise an area of Icelandic settlement called the

Vatnabyggd (Lakes Settlement) area. One of the goals of the visit is

to further strengthen the existing cultural ties between Iceland and

Saskatchewan people of Icelandic origin.

The people of Wynyard, Elfros, Foam Lake and elsewhere will welcome

the president, his daughter, Dalla lafsd¢ttir and his official party

to the area where day-long events have been planned.

President Grimsson will return to Regina for a breakfast with

members of the Saskatchewan business and education sectors July

30, before departing the province.
