ROMANOW PARTICIPATES IN UKRAINE/SASKATCHEWAN BUSINESS PARTNERSHIPS

Released on January 28, 1999

Premier Roy Romanow and Mr. Sergiy Borovyk, charge d'affaires, Embassy

of Ukraine today participated in the signing of four commercial

contracts between Saskatchewan cultural sector businesses and their

partners in Ukraine. The contracts build on commercial co-operation

established between Saskatchewan and Ukraine as a result of a trade

mission by Premier Romanow in 1995.

"I am pleased and honoured to be present today as partners from

Saskatchewan and Ukraine strengthen their cultural and economic ties,"

Romanow said. "These Saskatchewan businesses - Mind's Eye Pictures,

Four Square Productions and Coteau Books have translated their

business skill at home into success abroad. This is good for

Saskatchewan and Ukraine."

"The partnership struck in 1995 between Ukraine and Saskatchewan

continues to pay dividends," Borovyk said. "Our governments and

businesses are working to find new ways to prosper together."

Four Square Productions signed two agreements to co-produce two new

documentaries with partners in Ukraine. The documentaries titled The

Catacomb Church of Markova' and The Fatal Embrace: Ukrainians and

Jews' will be produced in both countries and employ fifteen to twenty

people per production.

Mind's Eye Pictures announced that their co-production with

Dovzhenko Film Studios of Ukraine is in the final stages of

development and into pre-production. Mind's Eye Pictures signed

a $4 million dollar co-production agreement with Dovzhenko Film

Studios in 1995, during the premier's trade mission to Ukraine.

Saskatchewan Communications Network (SCN) will assist in the

development of the co-production. Production of the film will

employ 100 Saskatchewan and Ukraine cast and crew and will be

shot in both countries.

Coteau books signed an agreement with Veselka Publishers of

Ukraine for the development and publication in 2000 of two

juvenile novels in English and Ukrainian. Coteau also announced

that Osnovy Press of Ukraine will publish an Ukrainian language

edition of Two Lands, New Visions: An Anthology of Short Stories

From Canada and Ukraine' this fall.

Today's in-Canada signing ceremony occurs simultaneously with the

one organized for Prime Minister Chretien as part of Canada's

first official and historic visit to Ukraine. Four Square

Productions will showcase their latest co-production entitled

Scarred by History', produced with Novy Kanal of Ukraine, as

part of the prime minister's visit.

Saskatchewan formalized relations with the national government of

Ukraine in 1995 with the signing of the Saskatchewan Ukraine

Memorandum of Co-operation. Since that time, steady progress has

been made in expanding initiatives under this agreement.
