Economic and Co-operative Development Minister Janice MacKinnon today
congratulated the Cypress Hills REDA for its success in generating and
promoting economic growth and job creation in the southwest corner of
the province.
"The Cypress Hills REDA plays an important role in their region's
economic development initiatives," MacKinnon said. "Successes include
the opening of satellite offices in Eastend, Shaunavon, Maple Creek,
the Nekaneet First Nations Indian Reserve, Gull Lake, Frontier and
Climax thereby increasing the REDA's ability to provide services in
the region. As well, the Cypress Hills REDA is an important player in
the establishing of Red Coat Stock Farm Limited, a 600 sow farrow to
finish hog operation. This $4.7 million project is expected to create
five full-time and two part-time jobs."
MacKinnon used the occasion of the first Regional Economic Development
Authority (REDA) Week in Saskatchewan, February 14 to 20, to commend
the local organization for its successful initiatives.
"We have had a significant impact on many business ventures in the
southwest towards improving the economic outlook of the area," said
Norm Lavoy, Chairperson of the Cypress Hills REDA. "The REDA concept
has the potential to be one of the most effective for facilitating
local economic development."
The Cypress Hills REDA is one of 27 in Saskatchewan providing
business development service to their communities and regions.
REDAs have assisted in community business projects that range
from youth employment initiatives to tourism-related projects, to
feasibility studies and recreational facilities.
REDAs are grassroots organizations, bringing together business,
co-operatives and local governments to pool their organizational,
professional and financial resources in order to encourage job
creation and investment in the region.
"REDAs have done an outstanding job of generating economic growth
and jobs in communities throughout Saskatchewan," MacKinnon said.
"They have succeeded because they know the needs of their
communities and the best direction to follow for the future."
