HEALTH MINISTER OPENS SATELLITE DIALYSIS UNIT IN YORKTON

Released on February 4, 1999

Health Minister Pat Atkinson today announced that with the official

opening of a new renal dialysis satellite unit in Yorkton some

dialysis patients in the area are able to receive dialysis services

closer to home.

"We are extending renal dialysis services further into rural

Saskatchewan, significantly improving the quality of life for eight

dialysis patients in the Yorkton area," Atkinson said. "The new

Yorkton unit complements dialysis service in Regina and Saskatoon,

home dialysis service throughout the province and satellite units in

Prince Albert, Lloydminster and Tisdale."

With the opening of the Yorkton site, Saskatchewan has doubled the

number of satellite dialysis units in the province in the past nine

months, bringing satellite dialysis services to 15 people who were

previously travelling to Regina or Saskatoon for dialysis.

Saskatchewan Health is providing the East Central Health District

$200,000 in annual operating funding to ensure residents continue to

have access to dialysis services in the Yorkton unit.

The province has also provided one-time funding of $50,000 for

training staff in the Regina Home Unit. Yorkton's site is the

first satellite developed from Regina.

The East Central site was selected for the satellite service by

the North Valley, Assiniboine Valley, Touchwood Qu'Appelle and

Regina health districts and the Saskatchewan Kidney Foundation,

following a patient analysis by Saskatchewan's Dialysis Working

Group.

"The East Central Health District is very pleased to be the host

district for a treatment team, that transcends distance and

district borders, for kidney patients in this area," East Central

Health District Board Chairperson Mary Anderson said.

There are approximately 380 renal dialysis patients in

Saskatchewan. Dialysis, necessary to keep patients with endstage

renal disease alive, cleans toxic substances and excess water

from the patient's blood.
