EDUCATION MINISTER SERBY NAMED HEAD OF CANADIAN DELEGATION

Released on February 4, 1999

Education Minister Clay Serby has been named head of the Canadian

Delegation to the 34th Meeting of the South East Asian Ministers of

Education Organization (SEAMEO) in Singapore, February 7-9, 1999.

"I look forward to representing Canada at this meeting," Serby said.

"This is a marvelous opportunity to work with educators in the Asian

region to see how they are addressing similar challenges. As well, I

am certain there are many Saskatchewan models of success that would be

of interest to my Asian colleagues."

SEAMEO, founded in 1965, includes Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia,

Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore,

Thailand and Viet Nam. Canada, Germany, France, Australia, New

Zealand and the Netherlands are associate members. Canada's associate

membership is provided through the Council of Ministers of Education,

Canada (CMEC).

"Delegates to SEAMEO are familiar with Canadian education institutions

and expertise, notably in the use of technology, the training of

teachers, supporting business/management practices and languages

training," Serby said. "I hope to ensure a continuation of the strong

linkages Canada has made in this forum."

CMEC is an intergovernmental body made up of the ministers

responsible for elementary-secondary and advanced education from

the provinces and territories.

Minister Serby's expenses associated with this trip will be

covered by the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs and

International Trade.
