GARMENT MANUFACTURER SEWS UP DEAL TO MOVE TO SASKATCHEWAN

Released on December 9, 1999

A major Alberta clothing manufacturer is setting up shop in Saskatchewan

February 1.

Alberta Garment Manufacturing (AGM) of Calgary is expanding its operations to

Saskatoon with the purchase of Nygard International's building and equipment.

AGM will keep the current staff of 76 people and plans to double that over the

next two years as the business grows.

"Apparel and textiles is a Saskatchewan industry that's experienced phenomenal

growth -- an industry we've supported with significant investments in training

and technology," Economic and Co-operative Development Minister Janice

MacKinnon said. "AGM's move is an expression of confidence in the

manufacturing environment in this province."

AGM is one of Alberta's top producers of private label casual pants and shorts,

restaurant uniforms, safety work wear and corporate uniforms. It does a lot of

work for big-name labels like Levi Strauss (Dockers brand) and Mark's Work

Wearhouse. AGM markets extensively to retail stores in the United States.

"AGM-Sask Ltd. looks to Saskatchewan and Saskatoon, in particular, to add to

the necessary skilled labour to meet its extensive production needs for its

ever growing export market in the United States," AGM President Uwe Schiffke

said.

Four hundred companies make up Saskatchewan's apparel and textile industry,

with annual sales of $45 million. The industry employs 1,800 people, many of

them in rural Saskatchewan.
