Recycling the roads! Saskatchewan Highways and Transportation is
trying new technology on highways near Watrous, Raymore and Kerrobert
to try and maintain the province's extensive road network.
The technology is called "cold-in-place recycling." The top layer of
the road is removed, recycled and mixed with an oil additive and some
new aggregate. It's then re-applied to the road bed, creating a new
driving surface. A seal is then put on top of the new road to protect
it.
"This technology allows the department to use our current investment
in the highway system to our advantage," Highways and Transportation
Minister Judy Bradley said. "If we can cut down the cost of road
repairs we do, it could save taxpayers a lot of money."
Four sections of highway will undergo cold-in-place recycling this
fall: Highway 2 south of Watrous, Highway 6 north of Raymore and
Highways 21 and 51 north and east of Kerrobert for a total distance of
18.6 km.
"This $1.2 million project demonstrates the province's commitment to
preserving our investment in the most cost-effective manner," Bradley
said.
H.J.R. Asphalt Ltd. of Saskatoon has been awarded the contract.
Work is expected to begin in mid-August.
