ROSTHERN HOSPITAL, NURSING HOME PLAN UPGRADES

Released on August 11, 1999

The Gabriel Springs Health District got the okay today for renovations and

upgrades to the Rosthern Union Hospital and the Rosthern Mennonite Nursing Home.

Health Minister Pat Atkinson gave approval-in-principle to district plans to

convert a double occupancy ward at the nursing home to a single occupancy

unit. The change reflects current trends in long-term care and will allow the

home the flexibility to use the unit for transitional, convalescent,

palliative, respite, day and night, stabilization or therapeutic long-term

care, depending on needs.

The minister also approved installing a sprinkler and fire alarm system at the

hospital, as well as mechanical upgrades that will extend the life of the

facility.

"These types of renovation projects and safety upgrades are a great opportunity

for us to re-invest in facilities that are a valued part of the community,"

Atkinson said.

Province-wide, Saskatchewan Health will spend $37.8 million on capital projects

this year. The province pays 65 per cent of approved project costs, which are

determined as plans are finalized.

Capital projects can include construction of new facilities, urgent fire safety

upgrades, occupational health and safety corrections, energy management

initiatives, maintenance work and other building renovations.
