SASKATCHEWAN LAND INFORMATION SERVICES CORPORATION TO BE ESTABLISHED

Released on April 28, 1999

Justice Minister John Nilson today introduced The Land

Information Services Facilitation Act in the Legislative

Assembly.

The new legislation facilitates the establishment of the

Saskatchewan Land Information Services Corporation, a new Crown

corporation that partners Saskatchewan Justice Land Titles with

the SaskGeomatics Division of the Saskatchewan Property

Management Corporation (SPMC). The new act will allow for the

transfer of the Land Titles and SaskGeomatics Division employees

to the new Crown corporation.

"The creation of the Saskatchewan Land Information Services

Corporation is an exciting development," Nilson said. "It will

help us to provide faster, simpler and more effective land

title, registration and geographic information services to the

people and industries of Saskatchewan, while facilitating

economic growth and activity in the province."

Effective October 1, 1999, the Saskatchewan Land Information

Services Corporation will be responsible for the province's land

titles system, integrated provincial survey, mapping and

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and the Land Title

Automated Network Development Project (LAND).

"The Saskatchewan Land Information Services Corporation will

establish this province as a leader in providing modern,

consistent, responsive land registration and geographic

information services and infrastructure to all sectors of the

economy," Nilson said.

The LAND Project will automate Saskatchewan's outdated

paper-based Land Titles system and integrate it with Geographic

Information Systems (GIS) technology and databases that have

already been created by the SaskGIS initiative.

The new system will provide simpler, more accessible service and

consistent 24 to 48 hour title registration turnaround across the

province. The integration of GIS technology will allow users to

see computerized images of parcels of land, and access other

information about the land such as forest, soil and water cover,

as it becomes linked to the automated system.

The LAND Project team and Land Titles staff from Saskatchewan

Justice, along with SaskGeomatics Division employees from SPMC,

will transfer to the new corporation on October 1, 1999.
