LEGISLATION TO END NURSES' DISPUTE INTRODUCED

Released on April 8, 1999

Justice Minister John Nilson today introduced legislation to bring an

immediate end to the labour dispute between the Saskatchewan Union of

Nurses (SUN) and the employer organizations represented by the

Saskatchewan Association of Health Organizations (SAHO).

The legislation provides for a two per cent wage increase for all

employees each year, for three years, effective April 1, 1999. It

further allows the parties, through the collective bargaining process,

to provide an additional one per cent of wages payable for other

benefits.

The bill also allows for, through the collective bargaining process,

up to an additional 1.2 per cent of wages payable, to be applied to

address disparities between employees arising from the Dorsey report.

All other provisions of the existing contracts will remain in place.

However further collective bargaining can address outstanding

non-monetary issues if agreement can be reached between SUN and SAHO.

"It is our duty to ensure health care services for the people of

Saskatchewan," Nilson said. "It is a duty we take very seriously. We

present this bill to the Legislative Assembly as an orderly method of

safeguarding necessary health care services."
