SASKATCHEWAN PARTICIPATES IN KANSAI-CANADA WEST BUSINESS FORUM

Released on September 17, 1998

Economic and Co-operative Development Minister Janice MacKinnon today

highlighted Saskatchewan's competitive advantages as a place in which

to invest and do business to delegates at the third annual

Kansai-Canada West Business Forum in Winnipeg. The forum is designed

to strengthen business ties between Western Canada and the Kansai

region of Japan. Sessions at the 1998 forum will focus on sectors

important to Saskatchewan including tourism, building products,

processed foods and information technology.

"In 1997, Japan was Saskatchewan's second-best customer of export

products purchasing $749 million worth of goods," MacKinnon said. "As

a province that benefits from international trade, Saskatchewan must

maintain existing linkages and build new ones through events such as

this forum."

Trade with Japan accounted for more than 8 per cent of all

Saskatchewan exports in 1997. The total of $749 million last year

represents an increase of 23 per cent over 1993 figures.

The minister pointed out that Saskatchewan's overall low business

costs, central North American location and clean environment help to

make the province an attractive investment opportunity.

"This event is an excellent opportunity for Saskatchewan

representatives to meet Japanese customers," MacKinnon said. "I

am pleased that members of the Saskatchewan Trade and Export

Partnership (STEP) and the Saskatchewan and Saskatoon Chambers of

Commerce are here to promote Saskatchewan."

"It's important for the minister to meet with Executive Officers

of Kansai region companies," said STEP Trade Manager Nick

Diamond. "It helps open doors for Saskatchewan businesses."

This is the third time the Saskatoon and District Chamber of

Commerce has participated in the Kansai-Canada West Business

Forum. "This forum allows us to meet with members of the

Japanese Chambers of Commerce to build business connections and

sell Saskatchewan products and services on behalf of Saskatchewan

businesses," said Dennis Johnson, president of the Saskatoon and

District Chamber of Commerce.
