THE GRINNING LIZARD HELPS PREVENT EATING DISORDERS

Released on September 4, 1998

Health Minister Clay Serby today commended Moose Jaw's Grinning Lizard

Teen Wellness Centre for its important community work in fighting

eating disorders.

To help fight eating disorders throughout the province, Saskatchewan

Health distributes a wide variety of audio-visual and print

information to health districts, schools and organizations such as the

Grinning Lizard. This information helps health professionals, teens

and parents understand eating disorders, recognize the warning signs

and take action to prevent harm.

Grinning Lizard staff estimates that nearly half the teen girls they

see daily show an unhealthy preoccupation with their weight.

"We see in many of our girls an obsession with weight that will have

devastating health consequences if it continues," said Dianne

Aldridge, Director of the Grinning Lizard. "Our staff are very well

informed about eating disorders and other health concerns. We know

which district health professionals to contact when there is a

potential health problem."

Anorexia and bulimia are estimated to affect approximately 5.5 percent

of Saskatchewan women aged 14 to 25. Saskatchewan Health's provincial

strategy for combating eating disorders stresses the need for

development of community-based services.

"Preventing and managing eating disorders is one of our key

initiatives," Serby said. "We continue to invest in quality

health services to address this problem."

Since the new provincial strategy began in 1995 the Saskatchewan

Health Resource Centre has fulfilled more than 1,000 requests

from health providers and educators for information about eating

disorders. The Saskatchewan Health Resource Centre can be

reached at (306) 787-3090.
