CAMPBELL APPOINTED DEPUTY MINISTER OF NORTHERN AFFAIRS

Released on October 30, 1998

Premier Roy Romanow today announced the appointment of Alex Campbell

as Deputy Minister of Northern Affairs.

His appointment is effective December 1, 1998.

"Mr. Campbell brings with him twenty years of public sector

experience, having worked for the Governments of Manitoba and the

Northwest Territories," Romanow said.

Since 1993, he has served as Executive Director of Nunavut Tunngavik

Inc. (NTI), the organization charged with implementing all Inuit

obligations and responsibilities under the Nunavut Land Claims

Agreement, the largest treaty in Canadian history.

"I am pleased that the Government of Saskatchewan has successfully

recruited an individual of Mr. Campbell's experience and expertise and

am confident that his skills and background are well-suited to leading

the government's continued efforts in addressing the challenges facing

Northern Saskatchewan," Romanow added.

Campbell replaces Ray McKay who has retired from the public service

after a twenty year career including the past two years as deputy

minister.

Mr. McKay played a leading role in the development of many initiatives that have been designed to better the lives of all Northern Saskatchewan residents and I wish him all the best in the future," Romanow said.
