Released on October 27, 1998
Justice Minister John Nilson today recognized the growing network of
volunteers and programs assisting victims of crime in 600 communities
across Saskatchewan, as he proclaimed the fourth annual victims
services week, November 2 to 8, 1998.
To date, fifteen programs have been established in communities and
regions across this province to assist victims in the immediate
aftermath of a crime," Nilson said. "About 400 trained volunteers are
working closely with local police and community agencies, providing
victims with support, information and referral to specialized
services.
"This year, volunteer support workers will give more than 40,000 hours
of their time to help 20,000 people victimized by crime. A further
100 volunteers serving as board members will oversee local victim
services programs and ensure they are responsive to community needs."
The network of services for victims of crime is funded by the Victims
Fund, which is financed solely through the collection of a surcharge
on fines for provincial and federal offenses. The provincial Victims
Services Program oversees this service network and other programs,
including a compensation program and a victim-witness support program
to help victims during their involvement with the criminal justice
system. The Victims Services Program also co-ordinates education,
training and programs to prevent victimization.
In addition, Victims Services administers the following
Saskatchewan Justice-funded programs:
the Aboriginal Resource Officer Program, that reflects the
Aboriginal community's interests and concerns within the
justice system on behalf of Aboriginal victims of crime and
their families in four cities, and;
Eight programs responding to family violence delivered by
Aboriginal organizations in five cities.
"The many other agencies that work closely with local Victims
Services programs also play a vital role by providing
complementary services such as counselling, support groups and
emergency shelter to help victims as they recover from and deal
with the harm they have suffered as result of a crime," Nilson
said.
During Victims Services Week, local Victims Services programs and
community organizations are holding special activities to
recognize the importance of assisting victims of crime and to
honour volunteers for their vital contributions to keeping
communities safe.
"Recognizing and responding to the needs of victims is an
essential part of dealing effectively with crime," Nilson said.
"The Victims Services Program works to make victims' involvement
in the criminal justice process easier and less traumatic.
Dedicated community agencies provide specialized services to help
victims recover. I commend the hundreds of volunteers and
dedicated community agencies for their efforts on behalf of
victims. Their efforts contribute to a fair, equitable and safe
society supported by a justice system that is trusted and
understood."
