SMALL BUSINESS WEEK RECOGNIZED OCTOBER 25 TO 31

Released on October 23, 1998

Economic and Co-operative Development Minister Janice MacKinnon today

proclaimed October 25 to 31 as Small Business Week in Saskatchewan.

This week, also observed nationally, acknowledges and celebrates the

contributions small businesses make to the Saskatchewan and Canadian

economies.

"Saskatchewan's 30,000 small businesses have a big impact on our

economy," MacKinnon said. "These hard working entrepreneurs create

jobs and contribute to our province's high quality of life."

Saskatchewan small businesses employ about one-third of the province's

labour force and account for 40 per cent of total private sector

employment. Their payrolls inject more than $2.5 billion into the

provincial economy annually.

"Small business is an integral part of a Saskatchewan economy that

grew faster in the last five years than any other in Canada,"

MacKinnon said. "Our small businesses are helping build a new

Saskatchewan that is confident, outward-looking and diversified."
