FARM SAFETY POSTER WINNERS ANNOUNCED

Released on November 24, 1998

Labour Minister Joanne Crofford today announced the winners of the

1999 Farm Safety Poster contest. Winning posters are featured in the

1999 Farm Safety Calendar that is being released at Agribition prior

to general distribution across the province.

Thirteen winners were selected from more than 1,600 entries from

school children across Saskatchewan. Crofford congratulated the

winners, adding she is encouraged that students from across

Saskatchewan are becoming more aware of the dangers that exist on the

farm.

"Even one death is too many and even one injury is too painful,"

Crofford said. "We are working with people across Saskatchewan to

help educate students about the risks of farm life, so they stay safe

now and become safer farmers in the future."

Overall grand prize winner was 13-year-old JoAnne Entz from the Haven

Colony School in Fox Valley. The grade six student won for her poster

warning of the dangers of playing near farm machinery. Prizes were

also awarded in each of four categories - machinery safety, yard and

livestock safety, chemical and poisonous gas safety and

electrical/fire safety. The contest was open to students from

Kindergarten to grade nine, with separate categories for Kindergarten

to grade three, grades four to six and grades seven to nine. First

prize winners were awarded $50 and second prize was $25.
