DRUG AWARENESS WEEK NOVEMBER 15 - 21

Released on November 13, 1998

Associate Health Minister Judy Junor extends a special thanks in

recognition of individuals and communities who promote and increase

awareness and prevention of alcohol and other drug abuse issues during

Drug Awareness Week.

"In the past two years, the number of community activities has

increased substantially," Junor announced today. "Participation and

commitment for promoting drug awareness continues to grow."

The 1998 theme is, "You Make a Difference." Communities are making a

difference during Drug Awareness Week and throughout the year by

focusing on their local drug and alcohol issues such as substance

abuse, fetal alcohol syndrome, the designated driver program, drug

injection users and Aids, alcohol and the law, and prevention with

youth.

A new province-wide awareness initiative is a Drug Awareness Week

tabloid that targets grade six - grade nine students.

The 1998 Provincial Drug Awareness Week kick off is co-ordinated by

the Living Sky Health District Drug Awareness Week Committee and local

youth. The launch event will be held in Wynyard Monday, November 16.

The kick off will premiere a youth video production entitled, "It

Starts With Us." School divisions, recreational associations, youth

from nine high schools from the Living Sky Health District including

SADD (Students Against Drinking and Driving) and Peers Helping Peers

groups have been involved with the project.

Junor invited individuals to celebrate Drug Awareness Week and

participate in the many special events planned by community

groups throughout the province.
