CRIME PREVENTION CONTEST WINNERS ANNOUNCED

Released on November 13, 1998

More than 100 students from North Battleford schools have made a

commitment to crime prevention and have displayed their commitment

through entries they submitted to the Crime Prevention contest, an SGI

CANADA-sponsored initiative aimed at improving the attitudes of youth

toward crime.

"Most kids are good kids and positive behaviour should be encouraged

whenever possible," said Dwain Lingenfelter, Deputy Premier and

Minister of Crown Investments Corporation. "The contest entries we

received reflected positive attitudes toward crime prevention that are

very promising and this contributes to the safety of our communities."

Students in grades 7 to 12 at public and separate schools in North

Battleford were encouraged to depict why criminal behaviour is a bad

idea by designing a poster, producing a radio message or writing a

500-word essay. Winners were chosen based on creativity and the

clarity of the message they conveyed in their submissions.

"The entries were very impressive and choosing the winners was a

difficult task," Lingenfelter said. "I want to congratulate all of

the winners and their schools and encourage them to maintain their

positive attitude toward crime prevention."

The winners and the runners-up of the contest were announced at an

awards ceremony yesterday at the Don Ross Centre. The contest winners

were awarded a $750 prize pack of sporting and audio equipment and the

winners' schools each received a $750 honorarium.
