ONE SAFE TRIP DESERVES ANOTHER CHILD RESTRAINT CAMPAIGN ANNOUNCED

Released on May 1, 1998

Deputy Premier and Crown Investments Corporation Minister Dwain

Lingenfelter today announced a new traffic safety awareness campaign

aimed at increasing the proper use of child restraints.

"Clicking a seat belt on is simple and more than 90 per cent of adults

in Saskatchewan buckle up," Lingenfelter said. "However, restraining

a child properly can be more complicated, which is why many children

may be put at risk while travelling. This multi-faceted campaign

works to educate parents on safely restraining their children in their

vehicles.

"The campaign is called One Safe Trip Deserves Another. Throughout

May and until June 30, parents can fill out an entry form that tests

their knowledge about the correct use of child restraints."

Grand prize is a trip for four to Universal Studios Hollywood and Sea

World, courtesy of SGI's partner, CAA Saskatchewan Travel Agency.

An SGI survey showed that 75 per cent of children under age one were

not properly restrained in a moving vehicle. One-third of all

children under age five - infants and toddlers - were not properly

restrained. The survey dealt with children in infant carriers, child

seats, booster seats and seat belts.

The most common problem for children under age one is failing to

place the infant seat facing the rear. Among children ages one

to four, the main problem is failing to use the tether strap

harness with the child seat.

"CAA Saskatchewan promotes safety on our roads an highways for

all people who use them - and that includes children," said

Maureen Murray with CAA Saskatchewan. "With this campaign, we

want to educate parents about the correct way to transport their

children. Often, parents have the best intentions, but not

enough information. That's where the contest quiz and our

drive-in clinics come in."

Drive-in inspection clinics will be held province-wide throughout

May and June to promote proper use of child restraints. People

are urged to attend the clinics with their children and have the

experts explain proper use of child restraints to them.

Information on the proper use of child restraints and contest

entry forms are available at the clinics, as well as from all SGI

claims centres, licence issuers and CAA Saskatchewan offices.
