Highways and Transportation Minister Judy Bradley today said this
year's highway construction and preservation program is on track and
already 35 highway improvement projects across the province valued at
more than $74 million are completed or underway.
"We are investing $219 million in our highways this year," Bradley
said. "Some highway improvement projects are already complete and
work is underway on many others. More projects will be getting
underway soon. Motorists will also see increased maintenance activity
on our highways this summer."
Projects completed in this construction season include:
A 5.2 km resurfacing project on Highway No. 55 from 8 km east of
the Highway No. 55 junction with Highway No. 155 to 2.8 km east
of its junction with Highway No. 155. Work began on the project
in mid May and was completed by June 1st 1998. This resurfacing
was done in partnership with Clearwater Forest Products Ltd. as
part of the Trucking Partnership Program. Under this program,
the company reduced log trucking costs with half of the savings
used in turn to finance these road improvements.
5.4 km of resurfacing was completed on Highway No. 55 from west
of Meadow Lake Sawmill to east of Meadow Lake and on Highway
No. 3 east of Glaslyn. Work started in early May and was
completed in early June.
Resurfacing of 42.4 km on Highway No. 11 from Kenaston to Dundurn
was completed in early June.
Resurfacing was finished in early May on Highway No. 363
beginning 18 km west of Moose Jaw and to the west for a
distance of 12.2 km.
19.5 km of resurfacing was completed in early June on
Highway No. 10 between Melville and Duff.
Highway improvement projects underway in northern Saskatchewan
include:
A 20.1 km resurfacing project on Highway No. 2 is scheduled
to begin in mid July with completion expected in mid August.
Work will be done from the south junction of Highway No. 165
to the north junction of Highway No. 165.
Grading of 16.7 km is being done on Highway No. 965 east of
the Junction of Highway No. 903 and the Jans Bay and Canoe
Lake Access. The work planned for completion by the end of
October 1998.
A 16.9 km grading project is underway on Highway No. 903
from Muskoseu Creek to Broad Creek. The project is planned
for completion by the end of October 1998.
Resurfacing is underway on sections of Highway Nos. 3, 4 and
55. On Highway No. 3 resurfacing is occurring 7.3 km east
and west of Medstead and 3 km east of the Medstead Access.
On Highway No. 55 3 km of resurfacing is being done east of
the Junction of Highway No. 26 and from Peerless to 3 km
west. On Highway No. 4 various sections are being done from
6 km to 12 km north of Glaslyn. The resurfacing work should
be completed on all sections by the end of June.
Grading is underway on Highway No. 165 (Besnard Lake Road)
from 14 km north of the Junction of Highway No. 2 to 33 km
north for a total distance of 18.6 km. The project is
expected to be completed by September 1998.
Resurfacing is being done on Highway No. 55 from 7.6 km east
of Smokey Burn to west of Battle Heights (starting 13 km
east of the Junction No. 123) for a total distance of
23.1 km. It is expected the project will be completed by
early July.
There will be 16 km of resurfacing on Highway No. 2 north of
Junction No. 916 to 10 km north with completion planned for
mid July 1998.
Highway improvement projects underway in central Saskatchewan
include:
A 21 km paving project on Highway No. 20 from north of
Humboldt to north of Pilger commenced in early June with
completion planned for early September 1998. This project
is cost-shared with the federal government as part of the
Canada-Saskatchewan Agri-Infrastructure Program.
Work started in early June on resurfacing from Makwa on
Highway No. 304 to 16.2 km east. Expected completion is in
August.
A 23.6 km paving project on Highway No. 4 from east of Cando
to Red Pheasant First Nation is scheduled for completion by
early August 1998.
Resurfacing is being done on sections of Highway No. 4 from
3.2 km to 12.6 km and from 27.1 km to 32.6 km north of its
junction with Highway No. 31 for a total of 14.9 km with
completion expected in mid June.
In early May grading and paving was started on Highway
No. 368 for a total distance of 14.8 km. The project is
planned for completion on October 31, 1998 and will see
grading and paving done on Highway No. 368 from the junction
of Highway No. 5 at Meunster to 14.8 km north of the
junction of Highway No. 5 at the intersection with Grid
No. 756.
12.9 km of resurfacing on Highway No. 5 from Kamsack to
Veregin is expected to commence in late July with completion
planned for late September 1998.
Bridge work, grading and paving is taking place on 3.3 km of
Highway No. 15 at the South Saskatchewan River crossing at
Outlook. The bridge work and paving is expected to be
completed by the end of September 1998.
There will be 3.7 km of resurfacing done on Highway No. 15
from the Junction of Highway No. 42 to west of Milden. The
project began in mid May with completion expected in June.
A 19 km resurfacing project on the south bound lanes of
Highway No. 11 from the Davidson Access to Girvin; from 1 km
southeast of Girvin to 3 km southeast of Girvin and from
4 km northwest of Aylesbury to Aylesbury started in late
May. Planned completion for the project is early July.
Work started in late May on an acceleration lane at the
Junction of Highway No. 16 and the Lloydminster Upgrader.
This safety improvement project is planned for completion by
the end of June.
Resurfacing is being done for a total distance of 15.4 km on
Highway No. 35 from north of Wadena to the Junction of
Highway No. 49. Work, this year, began on the project in
early May and is expected to be completed by late June.
On Highway No. 21 there will be 17.6 km of grading and
paving from Unity north to Grid No. 787. Work commenced in
early May and is expected to be completed in October. This
project is cost-shared with the federal government as part
of the Canada-Saskatchewan Agri-Infrastructure Program.
Resurfacing is expected to begin in early July with
completion expected in late August on Highway No. 16 from
the Manitoba border to Langenburg for a total distance of
14.7 km.
Highway improvements underway in southern Saskatchewan include:
In late May, a 12.7 km paving project began on Highway
No. 32 between Pennant and Portreeve and is scheduled for
completion in mid July.
14.75 km resurfacing will be started in early July on the
westbound lanes of Highway No. 1 between Parkbeg and
Mortlach. The project is expected to start in late June and
is planned for completion in late August 1998.
13.2 km of resurfacing on various sections of Highway
Nos. 18, 35 and 42 is expected to begin in late July with
completion planned for the end of August.
Paving is being done on Highway No. 8 and No. 48 from west
of Fairlight to north of Fairlight for a distance of
18.6 km. This project is expected to be completed by late
July and is cost-shared with the federal government as part
of the Canada-Saskatchewan Agri-Infrastructure Program.
Resurfacing is underway on 4.2 km on Highway No. 1 east of
Swift Current as well as construction of a climbing lane and
resurfacing on Highway No. 4 north of Swift Current. This
work is expected to be completed in late June.
Resurfacing is being done on Highway No. 1 from west of
Piapot to the Junction of Highway No. 21 for a total
distance of 7 km. The project commenced in mid May and is
to be completed by late June.
15.8 km will be resurfaced on Highway No. 7 from Netherhill
west to Kindersley. Work started in mid May and is planned
for completion in late June.
A 25.7 km paving project started on Highway No. 334 from
east of Avonlea to the Junction of Highway No. 6 in May and
is expected to be completed by late September. This project
is cost-shared with the federal government as part of the
Canada-Saskatchewan Agri-Infrastructure Program.
There are two grading/twinning projects totalling 27 km on
Highway No. 1 west of Gull Lake. Grading commenced at the
end of the current four lane just west of Gull Lake on
June 11 and will move west for 15.6 km. Also this month
11.8 km of grading will commence at the end of the other
grading project. The grading projects are planned for
completion by October 1998.
"We urge people to exercise caution and patience as they come
upon these highway improvements being undertaken throughout
Saskatchewan," Bradley said.
