CARROT RIVER SBLA RECOGNIZED FOR 30 JOBS CREATED

Released on July 28, 1998

Economic and Co-operative Development Minister Janice MacKinnon today

recognized the Carrot River and District Economic Development

Co-operative for helping to create and sustain 30 jobs through the

Small Business Loans Association (SBLA) program.

"I am pleased to be able to honour the Carrot River and District

Economic Development Co-operative in this way," MacKinnon said.

"SBLAs are an essential part of the province's focus on working with

communities to create opportunities and jobs for Saskatchewan people."

MacKinnon presented a certificate to Duril Touet, Carrot River Town

Administrator and member of the local SBLA board.

"Through the Small Business Loans Association program, Carrot River

and the provincial government are co-operating to assist community-based economic growth," Lynn Kinzel, Carrot River Economic Development

Officer said. "This program has helped many innovative small business

entrepreuners in this region to create and maintain jobs."

The Carrot River and District Economic Development Co-operative has

helped a number of new businesses in the community get started

including a mobile welding shop, a variety store and a knitwear

manufacturer.

"The positive growth we've seen as a result of SBLA funding is an

example of what can be accomplished when the government and

communities work together," MacKinnon said. "The kind of growth

spurred by SBLAs plays a crucial role in building the rural

economy. Investing in innovative small businesses promotes job

creation for the benefit of all our communities to keep our

society healthy and strong."

Under the SBLA program, the government provides funding to local

SBLA organizations. In turn, SBLAs provide loans of up to $5,000

to businesses that have experienced difficulty accessing

financing through traditional means.

There are currently 321 incorporated SBLAs. From inception of the

program in 1989 to May 31, 1998, SBLAs have made 5,604 loans with

a total value of $24,702,026, which have assisted in the creation

or maintenance of 12,185 jobs. There are currently 2,085 active

loans with a total value of $5,779,100.
