NEW WESTERN DEVELOPMENT MUSEUM BOARD MEMBERS NAMED

Released on December 22, 1998

Municipal Affairs, Culture and Housing Minister Carol Teichrob

announced the appointment of six new members to the Board of the

Western Development Museum, which oversees operation and management of

the Western Development Museum throughout Saskatchewan.

In making the announcement, Minister Teichrob acknowledged the

important role the Western Development Museum plays "to preserve and

promote an understanding of the economic and cultural development of

Western Canada, with an emphasis on Saskatchewan."

The theme of each museum branch provides visitors with unique sensory

glimpses of the past. The History of Transportation (Moose Jaw),

Heritage Farm and Village (North Battleford), 1910 Boomtown

(Saskatoon), and Story of People (Yorkton) facilities - house

vehicles, machinery, tools, vignettes and other interesting artifacts

of significant heritage value connected to the economic and cultural

development of western Canada.

New members appointed include Kate Waygood, Saskatoon, who will Chair

the Board; Gary Loutzenhiser, Moose Jaw; Tina Dryhorub, Richard; Nick

Catchuk, Yorkton; Kae Henley, Yorkton; and Peter Hoffmann, Regina.

They join re-appointed members Paul Sayers, North Battleford, and Mary

Jean Martin, Saskatoon.

The Western Development Museum was established by legislation in

1949, starting with branches in North Battleford and Saskatoon.

Each relies on a combination of visitor admission fees, gift shop

and other customer services sales, membership contributions, and

provincial government grant revenue to operate. In addition to

featuring artifacts, the museums annually attract visitors to

shows and festivals. Annual combined attendance ranges between

215-220,000 patrons, of which 30,000 are school children.
