WIENS TO RAISE AGRICULTURAL TRADE ISSUES IN UNITED STATES

Released on December 4, 1998

Intergovernmental and Aboriginal Affairs Minister Berny Wiens will

attend the Annual Meeting of the Council of State Governments from

December 6 8 in San Antonio, Texas. In addition to attending

sessions, Wiens will make a presentation at a panel entitled Our

Shared Borders Challenges and Opportunities for North American

States/Provinces.

"I will raise Saskatchewan's growing concerns over agricultural trade

matters and work with my American colleagues at the state level to

identify steps we can take together to manage trade issues more

effectively," Wiens said. "Although international trade is a federal

responsibility in Canada and the United States, there are many steps

that we can take together at the provincial state level to ensure

the free flow of Saskatchewan goods to the United States and beyond."

On the way back from San Antonio, Wiens will meet with Montana

Lieutenant Governor Judy Martz and North Dakota Lieutenant Governor

Rosemarie Myrdal.

"Saskatchewan producers stand to benefit from improved lines of

communication and government-to-government relations with North Dakota

and Montana," Wiens said.

"In addition to sharing our concerns on important agricultural

trade issues, we will discuss a number of other cross-border

issues including transportation, water and environmental

management."
