MOOSE JAW LIQUOR STORE RELOCATING TO CPR STATION

Released on August 24, 1998

MLA for Moose Jaw Wakamow Lorne Calvert and MLA for Moose Jaw North

Glenn Hagel, on behalf of Maynard Sonntag, minister responsible for

the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority, today announced the

Fairford Street Liquor Store in Moose Jaw will be relocated to the

downtown heritage CPR Station.

"The renovation of this beautiful building will not only protect a

national landmark and assist in revitalizing downtown Moose Jaw, but

will also meet our lease cost and location suitability requirements

for a liquor store," Hagel said.

The agreement was signed earlier this month by the Liquor and Gaming

Authority and the developer, Rocom Management Ltd. of Saskatoon. It

follows a public tender issued in October 1997. The agreement is

conditional, pending renovation plan approval by the federal minister

responsible for The Heritage Railway Station's Protection Act.

"We hope to have federal approval on the plans within three to six

months," Hagel said. "Renovations are expected to take about six

months and create more than $2 million of economic activity."

The 11,500 square foot station store will replace one of the

city's present liquor stores, located at 100 Fairford Street

West. This 6,500 square foot site was deemed unsuitable due to

retail space restrictions, parking problems and restricted

accessibility. No changes are planned at this time for Moose

Jaw's other liquor store location, on Fourth Avenue South West.

The station space will be leased by the Authority. The Authority

presently owns the location on Fairford Street; once the move is

completed, this building will be sold.

"I'm very pleased to have the Liquor and Gaming Authority play a

role in the continuing downtown revitalization of Moose Jaw,"

Calvert said. "I'm also looking forward to what I anticipate

will be a very unique addition to the province's liquor store

network. I believe customers will be better served through the

new location and larger space."
