SASKATCHEWAN HEALTH ADVISES RESIDENTS TO AVOID CONSUMPTION OF CERTAIN LUNCHMATE SNACK PRODUCTS

Released on April 6, 1998

Saskatchewan Deputy Chief Medical Health Officer Dr. Eric Young today

is advising Saskatchewan residents to avoid consumption of any of the

following Schneider's Lunchmate Snack Products with best before dates

April 1 and May 17, 1998:

Lunchmate Chicken Soft Taco UPC Code 062000192758

Lunchmate Beef Taco UPC Code 062000192710

Lunchmate Two Cheese Pizza UPC Code 062000192833

Lunchmate Big Combo Beef Taco UPC Code 062000192598

Dr. Young is reinforcing a recent health hazard alert from the

Canadian Food Inspection Agency.

Saskatchewan has had five new cases of Salmonella enteriditis that may

be associated with these products in the last two weeks. These cases

are currently under investigation.

Salmonella infections are due to salmonella bacteria and can lead to

serious illness. Symptoms and signs include diarrhea, abdominal pain,

headache, fever, loss of appetite and nausea and usually appear within

one to three days after consumption of contaminated product. The

infection may cause severe dehydration among young children and the

elderly.

"Individuals suffering these types of symptoms are encouraged to

contact their physician," Young added.

Saskatchewan Health and health districts are working with the

Canadian Food Inspection Agency to monitor the effectiveness of a

voluntary recall that has been initiated by the J. M. Schneider

Company.
