Health Minister Clay Serby today announced $7,500 in funding to
support the Justice Emmett Hall Memorial Foundation in holding a
Memorial Lecture at the biennial conference of the Canadian Health
Economics Research Association.
"Saskatchewan is the birthplace of medicare and we are pleased to be
investing in this foundation which recognizes the dedication and
commitment of the late Justice Emmett Hall," Serby said. "Tommy
Douglas brought medicare to Saskatchewan in 1962 and the efforts of
Justice Hall helped ensure all Canadians eventually had access to this
important program which has become part of the fibre of who we are as
Canadians."
The intent of the Justice Emmett Hall Memorial Foundation's lecture is
to recognize individuals who have made outstanding leadership
contributions to Canada's health-related disciplines.
The Justice Hall Memorial lecturer will be nominated by his or her
peers and will have made outstanding contributions to the advancement
of the health ideals of equity, fairness, justice and efficiency in
Canada's health system, as articulated by Justice Emmett Hall.
The Canadian Health Economics Research Association established
the foundation as a non-profit charitable organization in honour
of Justice Emmett Hall, a Saskatchewan lawyer and former Supreme
Court Judge who chaired the Royal Commission that in 1964
recommended the implementation of medicare in Canada.
The Canadian Health Economics Research Association originated in
Regina as a national non-profit association of health economists
and social scientists to promote economic research in the health
sector and to hold biennial research conferences.
