GRAVELBOURG WATER SUPPLY SYSTEM OFFICIALLY OPENED

Released on October 30, 1997

Maynard Sonntag, minister responsible for Sask Water, along with local

dignitaries and residents today participated in the official opening

of Gravelbourg's $1.9 million upgrade to the town's water supply

system.

The completion of the improvements to the system will provide an

assured supply of quality water to approximately 1,300 people in

Gravelbourg and area. Upgrades to the system included renovations and

improvements to the water treatment plant, replacement of the pump

station and 11 kilometres of new pipe from Thomson Lake to

Gravelbourg.

"The benefits of securing a good supply of quality water for area

residents will not only enhance their quality of life but encourage

economic growth for the community too," Sonntag said. "Also, the

works will improve the taste and odour problems that occur during the

summer."

Construction of the system started last January and took about seven

months to complete. Eighteen jobs were created during the

construction phase. The system is owned and operated by Sask Water

who employs two people in the Gravelbourg area to operate it.
