Agriculture and Food Minister Eric Upshall today announced he would
meet with key industry stakeholders regarding the implications of the
recent Saskatchewan Pork International(SPI)/Intercon announcement.
SPI and Intercon announced on Friday, Sept. 26, that SPI would take an
equity interest in Intercon and that SPI would supply 82 per cent of
its hogs to Intercon. The remaining 18 per cent are supplied to
Tai Wan Packers of Moose Jaw, which is managed by Intercon.
Upshall said hog producers and some of the smaller hog packing and
processing plants have been asking how they access Saskatchewan hogs
now that SPI and Intercon/Tai Wan Packers have signed exclusive supply
contracts.
"SPI has stated that it is preparing to become a marketer of choice in
a competitive environment," Upshall said. "SPI has taken action it
believes will position the agency to remain an effective marketer for
producers. However, these actions do press the question of the single
desk. In this context, I must ensure that the interests of industry
stakeholders are protected.
"I want to talk to the industry players before reaching any
conclusions. The input I receive hopefully will lead to a solution
that will best meet the needs of all stakeholders in the hog
industry."
